When I started the sample application in hosted mode I got the error:
** Unable to load Mozilla for hosted mode **
java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /home/hellz/projects/gwt-linux-1.5.3
/mozilla-1.7.12/libxpcom.so: libstdc++.so.5:

This can be fixed by installing "libstdc++.so.5". Default available is "libstdc++.so.6"
sudo apt-get install libstdc++.so.5
